Engaging The Minds of Neurodivergent Children

Why Personalised Books Work So Well For Neurodivergent Children

As the parent of SEN children, I know how important it is to adapt to a neurodivergent child’s needs, and the difference it makes on confidence, development and overall wellbeing. This is what initially inspired me to start Personalised Penny. I created a book for my son, who has ASD and is partially sighted. It put him in the centre of his own unique adventure, with his favourite animal, place and sensory comforts.

Why Personalisation Helps Neurodivergent Children Engage

Personalised books are especially engaging for neurodivergent children as they reduce cognitive load, increase familiarity, and help children feel emotionally safe within the story. Seeing their own name and appearance reflected on the page can support focus, confidence and connection.

Reading is so important for children, not only academically but also for their imagination and brain development. Although digital technology is indeed taking over many aspects of learning, you really cannot beat an immersive book! Having your child see a character who looks and acts like them in their very own story is a great way to engage them in reading, learning, storytelling, and bonding.

Inclusive Books That Celebrate Every Child

We recently created a box for a little boy named Max for his seventh birthday. Max is autistic and suffers from ARFID, and he is mad about maps! He studies Google Earth and has listed all of the countries he wants to visit around the world. We created his very own around-the-world adventure, including his favourite countries, with maps for him to study and facts for him to learn. Max’s mum was over the moon with the result and couldn’t wait to give it to him on his special day.

It is so important that children see themselves in the stories they read. Every child is unique, and in a world of technology, filters, and social media, escapism can often take the form of traditional storytelling.

Familiarity, Predictability and Comfort in Storytelling

For children on the spectrum, autism friendly books and ADHD children’s books often ‘stand out’ as different. Personalised Penny aims to subtly blend sensory-friendly personalised learning books with traditional storytelling so each child is immersed in their own adventure without specifically referring to their condition. You are in charge, we can create any story you would like to ensure your child gets the most from their personalised storybooks. We want to create beautiful keepsakes by designing books that support children’s emotional regulation.
